5 green recipes to clean your home

Why use green recipes?

Cleaning is a part of our lives, whether you are a compulsive cleaner or not, it is time to accept it. But have you ever questioned what you bring into your home with traditional cleaning products? You are basically inviting in chemical compounds that reduce the quality of the air you breathe. So, if you want clean and safe air within your home, you have two options: buy non-chemical cleaning products or make your own.

What are your green cleaning champions?

The most important products that you should have in your pantry to make your own cleaning products are: white vinegar, baking soda and essential oil. These three are the most common ingredients on green cleaning products and here is why: Vinegar will effectively deodorize and disinfect your surfaces; baking soda helps you cut grease, deodorize, remove dirt and brighten up surfaces and fabrics. Meanwhile, essential oils will give your home your favorite fresh scent. Other products that common are ingredients like lemon, grapefruit and salt which will help disinfect and whiten.

Lets dig in!

1.- All purpose cleaner

When you are looking for a generic cleaner that you can use over your tables, desks and just surfaces in general. All you need to do is get a glass spray bottle and mix: 1 tsp borax, ½ tsp of washing soda, 1 tsp of liquid Castille soap and about 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix the ingredients within the spray bottle and you are ready to roll.  If you are looking for a cleaner specifically for your kitchen you can also make a paste with baking soda and warm water. Make small quantities at a time as the leftover paste will dry again.

2.- Glass Cleaner

To clean your windows and mirrors all you need to do is mix 2 cups of water, ½ cup of white vinegar, ¼ cup of alcohol (70%) and a couple drops of your favorite essential oil. Place all the ingredients inside a spray bottle. When you are ready to clean spray on a soft clean cloth and start rubbing. Extra tip: wait for a cloudy day to clean your glass or do it on evening hours; if the solution dries to quickly it will leave streaks on your windows.

3.- Carpet cleaner

For those of you with carpets in your apartment here is an easy way to keep it clean. Mix in a blender 2 cups of baking soda, ½ cup of corn flour, ½ cup of polenta (corn meal), 1 tablespoon of whole cloves, couple drops of your favorite essential oil. Once blended, keep this in a glass container. When it is time to clean just sprinkle the mix on the carpet and wait 5-10 minutes. Vacuum and discover a clean carpet.

If you have a nasty stain that you need to get rid off, use instead 1 tbsp of white vinegar and 1 tsp of liquid dishwasher mixed with 1 cup of warm water. Place these ingredients into a spray bottle and, working over the sink add 1 tsp of baking soda. The baking soda will react with the mix so you have to close the bottle as quickly as you can. Spray the mix on top of the stain and gently rub the stain away using an absorbent towel.

4.- Floor wipes

Well, not everyone has a wall to wall carpet so, how can you keep your floors clean? Try this recipe for floor wipes. The first thing you will need is a resealable package where you can store 4-8 cloths with the cleaning mixture. To make your cleaner just mix ¼ cup of water, ¼ cup of vinegar, ¼ cup of alcohol (70% concentrated), ¼ cup of lemon juice and 1 tbsp of liquid dish soap. 5.- Toilet cleaner:

No need for many different fancy products to clean your toilet, you only need some vinegar. Pour some undiluted white vinegar around the top of the toilet bowl and scrub. The vinegar will remove any odors and its antibacterial properties will keep your toilet free of microbes.
